My big thing about the “fast-paced” is that the pace has always been the same for me, from what I’ve seen. There are definitely the stops and the starts like you said. There are also the full redline, all hands on deck during an outage…but it’s the same from gig to gig.

Seasoned IT folks know the pace well, and we’re used to it, so it doesn’t seem that fast paced. It may be, to those new in the field. And the ugly reasons for it being “fast-paced” may not be always due to real work as I listed in the bullets.
